New service-hotline

The need for technical support and telephone service has increased considerably. And this is not because our machines have become more liable for breakdowns. Moreover, it is the case, that we sold a lot of machines in the last years. On the one hand we have introduced new machine, with more technology inside and on the other hand we have sold many of them to companies with less experience in bookbinding.
Thus, the number of service requests has grown immensely and we are not able to offer this service free of charge anymore.
We have decided to charge for technical support and the use of our hotline from April 1st, 2011 on. The charge will be EUR 15.- for every 15 minutes. For this, we will be appointing three technicians in the service department to answer your questions. This should improve our answering times and the availability of the service team.
Within the time of warranty, this service will still be free of charge. If you want to use the hotline service free of charge in the future, you may sign a service agreement. With this you will get an on-site service with different times of reaction. This includes the free-of-charge-hotline service. Please contact us if you are interested in such a service.
The number of our technical hotline for questions about our Prä-machines is:

Schmedt at the Digimedia

Düsseldorf fair management is extracting the digital business out of the Drupa and created the digimedia. Several different exhibitors, who work for the digital print industry and peripherals, will find a place to get together and present theirselves to the public. Customers will get the whole digital world in one place.

Schmedt is displaying at this debut show, as more and more customers need machines for the finishing of hardcover books for one-offs. Schmedt´s Prä-machines are dedicated for editions from 1 up to 300 pcs/h. The focus for these machines is put on minimizing setup-times for changing formats. Most of Schmedt´s machine do not need any setup-time for changes.

At the digimedia we will have on display: Block-making with the PräziPur PUR binder, case-making on the PräziCase SC2 and the new gluer PräziCoat Pro (for the first time presented in Europe!) with an automatic viscosity control. Last but not least there will be a PräLeg for the casing-in and e PräForm 55 for the final pressing and forming. In addition, there will be a Präzimark, to emboss names on the ready-made cases and a cutting machine 78CT presented by Schneider-Senator.
Come and visit us in in Düsseldorf hall 6 stand C57 - We are looking forward to meeting you there!

Schmedt at the Paperworld 2011

After 2009 and 2010 Schmedt again was at the Paperworld, for the third time. For the first time there was another machine on display beside the PräziMark: The case-maker PräziCase EC3. With these machines, cases could be made during the show and on request names could be embossed on as well. Paperworld has been a consumables show in the past but became more and more a fair for machines also. More customers wanted to learn how the materials could be processed with machines.
Of course we have presented several consumables, supplies and tools for bookbinders as we are supposed to be a one-stop-solution provider. There could be sold several of the bookbinders tools during the show.
Many international visitors, but also Germans, have expressed interest in our machines and we have had very good contact. The paperworld has been pretty successful for us this year.

How is a photobook being made?

Many consumers were asking themselves, how a photobook is being made. Giant amounts of data were transferred from the customer to the printers or former laboratories who make prints and photobooks like e.g. Cewe Color. In several data centres, massive server farms, the data will be processed and stored. It seems like magic that data for a product ordered at a drugstore in Hamburg, becomes a real product and returns to the same drugstore for pick-up. Or the data sent through the own pc at home, returns as a product three days later with the parcel service.

But to create "real" products from all the data, large machine lines are necessary. Photo printouts are only one product from a line of products, like calendars, puzzles, cards, mugs, mouse pads etc. And every product is made from a different machine.

A photobook is unique. To manufacture a photobook with a hardcover, many of the photobook manufacturers use machines from Schmedt. Made for the production of one-offs and small series, the Prä-machines were almost ideal for the making of photobooks.

How this looks like, can be seen in this video!

Photokina 2010 in Cologne

Photokina again has had a lot of visitors this year (more than 180.000 visitors). The present development is visible in Cologne as well: New ideas, growth, increasing demands, all these indicators justify the presence of Schmedt at the Photokina.
The photobook again is a very important factor for the photo industry. Nearly 5,9 million photo books have been ordered in Germany in 2009 ((Wirtschaftswoche 39). 4 Millions have been made by Cewe Color only, as they state. Within the last 5 years there should have been more than 10 million books! The market leader Cewe is planning a further development of this product line. Steadily they work on their software to create photo books online, the layout and the extend of the books, New cover materials realize a higher creation of value. Not only at the Cewe workshops Prä-Maschinen from Schmedt will be used to make hardcover photo books. With the PräziPur there is now a complete finishing line available to manufacture hardcover books. And this from one-edition 1 to  2-300 books / h.
The interest of the visitors from the industry has been enormous and end-consumers have been impressed by the live production of photo books at the show booth.

Trainingscenter Vienna

Werner Schober, former master of the guild of the Austrian bookbinders guild wrote in the magazine Bookbinder Austria:

"Recently we have opened our new trainings center in Vienna. Schmedt has supported us in a very generous way, which could rarely being found these days. As there is already a report about it by our teacher Gerhard Herberg, I would like to keep it short. The new workshop became very professional, so that the use for educating the apprentices only is not enough. We will also train our teachers and colleagues here to make it worth. The preparations have already been started and I hope that I could present the results with an invitation to some courses soon."

Schmedt has sponsored the workshop of the bookbinders trainings center in Vienna last year. Now all machines are available which are necessary to make a book with a hardcover and will be used for trainings.

How to make a hardcover?

The making of a hardcover book is divided in several different processes:
After the printing the print sheets will be cut and the single pages sorted together. These sheets will be bound to a book block. Cover, boards and spine will be put together to make a book case. These two parts, the block and the cover, will be added together and finally pressed and got ajoint formed in. If the cover is not being printed, there could be made an embossing onto the case.
You could see these single steps and the appropriate machines within our new video clip.
All our videos will be available in our Schmedt TV

New gluer with AVC: PräziCoat Pro

The new gluer PräziCoat Pro will be presented at Digimedia in Düsseldorf for the first time in Europe. New features of the new machine make it a perfect way to prepare covers for cae-making. The machine is dedicated for the use of digital printers.
Usual gluers have to be cleaned every evening to be prepared for the next day. This takes a lot of time. The new PräziCoat does not need to be cleaned every day. With the time control the machine will be ready the next morning when you need it, already with heated glue. The automatic viscosity control guarantees that the glue will always have the right viscosity. Water will be added, if neccessary, in relation to the humidity or temperature. Thus, the gluer is ready to work at any time even after breaks. When work is done, the machine has just to be turned off. No cleaning of the rollers required.
