PräMelt PO Plus

Does it really always have to be PUR? The smart way to achieve stronger binding.

PUR is considered the safe choice in many operations: when it really has to hold, people go with PUR. But is that always necessary—or is it often simply a reflex because “that’s how we’ve always done it”? Smaller workshops and binderies in particular know the downside: PUR can be impressively strong, but it often comes with more system effort and process complexity than you need in day-to-day production. On the other side is standard EVA hotmelt: straightforward and proven, but often at its limit as requirements increase—such as when higher strength or better results on coated, high-grammage digital printing papers are needed.

For a long time, there has been no truly compelling alternative between these two worlds. We’re closing that gap now!

The facts – PräMelt PO Plus in detail

Instead of thinking about a new machine right away, it’s worth taking a look at the most effective lever—often overlooked: the adhesive itself. Our new PräMelt PO Plus is a polyolefin-based hotmelt designed to increase process reliability while reducing complexity.

The biggest day-to-day advantage: you can use it for both spine gluing and side gluing. That alone reduces material changeovers, simplifies stockkeeping, and minimizes sources of error.

In addition, other key strengths deliver immediate benefits in your production:

  • Lower temperature, less stress: Processing is possible from around 140 °C. This not only protects the material and the machine, but also saves energy.
  • Less consumption, more efficiency: Depending on the settings, PO technology can reduce adhesive consumption while maintaining—or even improving—bond strength.
  • Faster set, earlier finishing: Books and brochures become handleable and trim-ready sooner, reducing throughput times and the space required at the perfect binder.
  • Better machine availability and cleaner operation: The adhesive is plasticizer-free and low-odor. Its high oxidation stability also leads to fewer deposits in the system, reducing cleaning effort.

Plain talk – When is switching worth it for you?

Let’s be clear. When is PräMelt PO Plus the right choice—and when should you stick with PUR?

Switching to PräMelt PO Plus is ideal if you:

  • mainly process standard to demanding digital printing papers.
  • want to reduce process complexity and work with one adhesive for everything.
  • want to cut energy costs and adhesive consumption without compromising durability.
  • want to reduce cleaning and maintenance effort on your existing hotmelt system.

PUR remains the better choice if you:

  • regularly process extremely coated or special substrates.
  • frequently bind grammages well above 170 g/m², where PUR fully plays to its strengths in adhesion.

The key point is: you don’t need to run the most complex solution all the time just for the occasional extreme case.

Our final tip: Test it yourself! Take two real jobs from your day-to-day work and compare the results. The best arguments don’t come from a brochure—they come from smooth, reliable production.
