Glossy, triple-twisted sewing thread made of 100% linen with a length of approx. 100 m. Thanks to its particularly smooth surface, the thread does not fray even when sewing through many paper layers and repeatedly pulling it through the sewing holes. It is suitable both for traditional hand sewing and for stitching leather.
For bookbinding, it is recommended to wax the thread before sewing (e.g. with beeswax). This gives it more grip when sewing and knotting, and reduces fraying.
What does “30/3” mean?
- 30 = number of metres of thread per 1 g (the higher the number, the finer the thread)
- /3 = three-ply twisted thread
Example: With type 10/3, only 10 m of thread weigh 1 g – meaning the thread is significantly thicker and stronger than a 30/3 thread.
Using Linen Sewing Thread Correctly: Hand Sewing on a Sewing Frame
In the video, Ingela Dierick demonstrates step by step how manual sewing is performed. The recording was produced as part of the exhibition “Meisterhafte Unikate – 100 Jahre Einbandkunst” with the support of the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony and Schmedt.
1. Positioning and opening the first section
- Place the first section onto the cords of the sewing frame.
- Open the section in the middle so the spine is easily accessible.
- Insert the needle from the inside to the outside through the first sewing hole.
2. First stitch & securing the thread
- Pull the linen thread completely through and leave a short tail inside.
- You will knot this tail with the working thread to secure the beginning.
3. Sewing around the first cord
- Move to the next sewing hole on the outside.
- Insert the needle from the outside to the inside.
- Move to the next hole inside and stitch from inside to outside again.
- On the outside, guide the thread under the cord to create a wrapping.
- Then stitch again from the outside to the inside.
This sequence (inside ? outside, around the cord, outside ? inside) is repeated for each cord.
4. Finishing the first section
- At the last hole, stitch once more from inside to outside and from outside to inside.
- Knot the starting thread with the working thread inside.
5. Adding the second section
- Place the next section and open it in the middle.
- Stitch from inside to outside.
- Wrap around each cord as before.
6. Kettle stitch
- At the end of the section, stitch from inside to outside.
- Loop the thread under the thread of the previous section (kettle stitch).
- Stitch back inside.
The kettle stitch connects the sections firmly.
7. Further sections
- All further sections are sewn the same way:
- from inside to outside
- around each cord
- kettle stitch at the end
8. Finishing the last section
- Make 2–3 extra kettle stitches.
- Knot the thread inside and trim it.
