Sidra is a bio-based alternative to real leather. It is made with about 40 % apple ingredients. The apples are pressed after harvesting and processed into juice. The derivatives of this process are pulverised and are then used to make Sidra.
This apple leather has a pleasant soft feel with a matt surface. It is well to work with (please note the following processing instructions) and excellent to emboss. In addition, it can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
Recommendations for processing
We recommend the use of hot glue for processing. When using dispersion adhesives, a strong adhesive glue, e.g. Planatol AD 94/5b, should be used. In addition, at approx. 0.6mm, the material is stronger than a classic cloth, so that turning-in and pressing duration must be adjusted accordingly. To verify that the material is suitable for bookbinding purposes, we had it tested by a professional menu card manufacturer. In addition, we have established in our own tests with our hardcover machines that if the parameters, such as adhesive adhesion, application thickness and pressure, are correct, the material can be processed very well. An industrial bookbinder ran Sidra on his fully automated Kolbus DA260 case-making machine, which worked without any problems.
The material is also fantastic for blind embossing; due to the pressure and heat, the embossed areas change colour, similar to real leather; this effect is particularly effective with light colours. On our sample card, customers can see a sample blind embossing on the colour "007 - apple green". In addition, we have carried out test series with gold and silver foils, which all turned out very positively. In summary, we can say that the material is generally very well suited for embossing. We have provided a photo of a blind embossing of each colour as the first image for the respective colour.
