Dispersion is the name given to a mixture of substances in which a solid is finely dispersed in a liquid. In dispersion adhesives, the binders (synthetic resins) are therefore not dissolved in water but dispersed, i.e. the synthetic resin particles (solid) are very finely distributed in water (liquid). Dispersion adhesives are often based on polyvinyl acetate (= PVAc), copolymers or polyacrylate and are sometimes also called glue or white glue.
They are applied on one side and must be joined wet. Strength is only achieved when the water has disappeared, i.e. has been absorbed by the material (or the air). When using dispersions, one bonding partner must therefore be absorbent (e.g. wood, paper, cardboard, leather, textile, etc.) and the parts to be joined must be fixed/pressed until the adhesive has set.
