Sidra is a bio-based alternative to genuine leather and consists of around 35% apple components. In apple juice production, around 300,000 tonnes of apple pomace are generated every year – these are the solid parts of the fruit that remain after pressing: peel, pulp and small core particles. This pomace is an abundantly available natural raw material that has traditionally only been reused to a limited extent. A large proportion remained unused.
For Sidra, this raw material is specifically processed: Immediately after juice production, the apple residues are collected,
gently dried and milled into a fine powder. This apple powder forms the bio-based component of the Sidra coating and is a key part
of the sustainable material concept.
To create a stable, hard-wearing and durable covering material, the apple powder is then combined with binders such as polyester and PU.
These provide structure, strength, dimensional stability and a uniform surface that meets the high demands of the bookbinding
and design sectors. The combination of natural by-products and modern binders unites sustainability with functional performance.
In this way, an innovative material is created that is not only resource-efficient but also actively contributes to waste reduction.
Using a by-product that would otherwise remain unused generates ecological added value and at the same time offers a contemporary
alternative to genuine leather and conventional synthetic leathers. Sidra thus combines sustainable thinking with modern material
technology – for high-quality, long-lasting and responsibly produced products.
Recommendations for processing
For processing we recommend using hot-melt glue. If dispersion adhesives are used, a strongly bonding adhesive should be chosen, for example Planatol AD 94/5b.
Sidra has a material thickness of 0.80 ± 0.10 mm and is therefore somewhat thicker than classic book cloths. The turn-ins and pressing times should be adjusted accordingly. To verify its suitability for bookbinding applications, the material has been tested by a professional menu cover manufacturer. Our internal tests on our hardcover machines have also shown that Sidra can be processed very well when the parameters – especially adhesion of the adhesive, coating weight and pressure – are correctly set. An industrial bookbinder has also successfully run Sidra on a fully automatic Kolbus case maker DA260.
Embossing behaviour
Sidra can be very well blind embossed and delivers a precise, elegant embossing result. The embossing stands out clearly and distinctly from the material and lends every product a particularly high-quality, handcrafted character.
Embossing with gold and silver foils has also been tested and achieved consistently very good results. Overall, Sidra is excellently suited for a wide variety of embossing applications. For each colour, a photo of a blind embossing is provided as the first image.

does this vegan apple leather come with a grain? ie is the roll long or short grain? or does it not matter due to the structure of the material?
The material does not have a grain as known from paper products, but it has a different in stretchabillity.
